So since I was in town I decided to take a walk up to the flagship Apple store on 59th and 5th. On my way up 6th Ave. I passed an ATT store at 50th street. Sure enough, there was an iPhone kiosk in the store, with two demo phones set up. Both were being checked out: on the left, two german guys, on the right, two asian tourists (unless, of course, one of them was a professional photographer).
I stood patiently and waited. And waited. A security guard was behind me. I asked: “Sold out, right?”
“Yeah.”
I finally get my chance to look at one up close. It’s slim, sleek, interface is snappy. I try Safari, but the wifi is not working. Isn’t EDGE data supposed to work when there is no wifi?
I mess around with it for another minute or two but without web access there’s really not much you can do. I try the keyboard: underwhelming. I have been using treos for a couple of years so I am used to those.
I decide to head up to the Apple store anyway; it’s only another 10 blocks. As I suspected, despite the fact that everyone knows phones are sold out, it’s still a mob scene:

The tables around the demo units are mobbed:

I finally get to use one with web access. It’s nice. I bear in mind despite how cool it is, my 755p at present does a lot more. Plus I have been reading about activation nightmares. I notice the accelerometer only works when the phone is semi-upright. I go to my webpage. Of course the flash part doesn’t work, though I am suprised the pages with the lightwav plugin do work. Interesting. It’s warm in the store, crowded and noisy. I hand it to the guy behind me looking over my shoulder, satisified that I got to at least try it out:
“Here you go.”
“Thanks!”
He is way too excited.
So, that’s my iPhone story.
